Dar es Salaam

Tanzania’s biggest city and Mikumi’s main gateway

Dar es Salaam is where most overland trips to Mikumi begin. Tanzania’s largest city, main port and busiest airport sits on the Indian Ocean roughly 280–300 km east of the park. By road that is anything from four and a half to six hours, depending on traffic getting out of the city and the trucks on the highway.

Three things make Dar a good safari gateway: frequent international and domestic flights, fast ferries to and from Zanzibar, and — since 2024 — the electric SGR railway to Morogoro, which takes the worst of the road out of the journey.

Top things to do: Dar es Salaam

Choose your Mikumi safari

From Dar the choice is between a very long day trip, a day trip that uses the SGR train, and an overnight. If you can spare a night, take it: you will see more animals and spend less of the trip looking at the back of a truck. Our ranking compares the options.

Walk the city centre

The compact centre mixes German and British colonial buildings, Asian merchant houses and modern towers. A guided walk takes in St Joseph’s Cathedral, the Askari Monument, the Botanical Garden and the harbour front.

Kivukoni Fish Market

Go early. The auction of the night’s catch on the harbour front is loud, slippery and fascinating, and the cooking stalls next door will fry what you buy.

Museums

The National Museum covers the country’s history from the fossil finds of Olduvai onwards; the open-air Village Museum, north of the centre, reconstructs traditional houses from across Tanzania.

Beaches and islands

For a swim, head to the Msasani Peninsula or take a boat to the small marine-reserve islands of Bongoyo and Mbudya off the northern suburbs.

Insider tips

  • Stay somewhere central or near the station the night before an early departure — crossing Dar at rush hour can add an hour or more.
  • Day trips by road leave before dawn. Have breakfast packed the night before.
  • Use a registered taxi or a ride-hailing app after dark.
  • The coast is hot and humid all year; Mikumi is drier and cooler at night.
