Best Time to Visit Mikumi

Mikumi is open all year and there is always something to see. But the season changes the experience — here is how.

The short answer: June to October, the dry season, is the best time for game viewing in Mikumi. The grass is low, the bush thins out and animals gather around the remaining water. The longer answer is that the green months have real advantages too — and that the park, unusually for southern Tanzania, stays accessible all year thanks to the highway.

The two seasons

Dry season (about June to October)

Clear skies, almost no rain, warm days and cool nights. As the weeks go by the plains turn from green to gold and then to dust, and the wildlife concentrates along the Mkata River, the Hippo Pools and the waterholes. Tracks are firm and the whole floodplain is open. This is also the busiest period — though “busy” in Mikumi is nothing like the northern parks. July and August can be chilly on an early drive; September and October are hot and hazy.

Green season (about November to May)

The rains usually begin in November or December and build to a peak in March and April. In between downpours there is plenty of sunshine. The park turns intensely green, many antelope drop their young, migrant birds arrive and the light is superb for photography. On the other hand the grass grows tall, animals disperse because water is everywhere, and from about March to May the black-cotton soil of the floodplain can make some tracks impassable.

Weather in Tanzania does not keep to a calendar: the rains can start weeks early or late, and their intensity varies from year to year. Treat the table as a pattern, not a promise.

Temperatures

Mikumi lies inland at a moderate altitude, so it is a little less sticky than the coast. Daytime temperatures are typically in the high 20s to low 30s °C for most of the year. Nights are mild in the wet months and distinctly cool from June to August, when a fleece is welcome on a dawn game drive.

Best time for…

  • General game viewing: July to October.
  • Lions and other predators: the late dry season, when prey gathers near water — and, in any month, early morning and late afternoon.
  • Birdwatching: November to April, when migrants are present and many species are in breeding plumage.
  • Photography: June for green landscapes with clear air; the green season for dramatic skies.
  • Lower prices and fewer vehicles: March to June and November.
  • Combining with a Zanzibar beach holiday: June to October and January to February have the best beach weather too.
  • Hiking in Udzungwa: June to October for dry trails; just after the rains for the fullest waterfalls.

Fly-in safaris and the weather

Day trips from Zanzibar operate all year. In the rainy months morning cloud or storms can occasionally delay or cancel a light-aircraft flight; reputable operators rebook or refund when that happens. If your dates are fixed, schedule the safari early in your holiday so there is room to move it.

When to book

For July to October and the Christmas–New Year period, reserve fly-in safaris and the smaller lodges several weeks ahead. Outside those times you can usually book a few days before. Free cancellation on most tours means there is little risk in booking early.

Our pick: late June or early July if you want green scenery, good game and fewer people; September if seeing as many animals as possible is the priority.
