Mikumi Safaris & Tours

Every sensible way to see Mikumi — by plane from Zanzibar, by road or train from Dar es Salaam, for a day or for longer — compared and bookable in a couple of taps.

Choosing a Mikumi safari comes down to two questions: where are you starting from, and can you spare a night? The tours below are grouped that way — fly-in day trips from Zanzibar, day trips from Dar es Salaam and Morogoro, overnight and multi-day safaris, and longer combinations with the Udzungwa Mountains, Nyerere and Ruaha.

Everything here is booked through GetYourGuide, which means live availability, free cancellation on most options and reserve-now-pay-later on many. Prices are indicative “from” starting points in euros per person and change with season, group size and exchange rates — tap any card for the live price in your own currency.

Read the inclusions. Mikumi tours differ most in what the price covers: flights or train tickets, park fees, lunch, hotel transfers on Zanzibar, and whether the vehicle is shared or private. A low starting price often assumes a full vehicle or leaves out park fees. Apart from the two or three long-established fly-in trips, many listings are new and have few or no reviews yet — we say so where that is the case.

Find the right safari for your starting point

Fly-in day safaris from Zanzibar

The classic: out by light aircraft in the morning, game drives and lunch in the park, back on the island by evening. The first listing is the long-running bestseller; the others are useful alternatives, and the last flies to neighbouring Nyerere (Selous) instead.

From Zanzibar: Mikumi Safari Day Trip with Flights and Lunch

The safari that put Mikumi on the map for beach holidaymakers, with more than three thousand reviews on GetYourGuide. You fly from Zanzibar to the park in the morning, join shared game drives in a 4x4 across the plains, stop for a bush lunch and fly back in the afternoon. It is a long day with an early start, but it turns a beach week into a beach-and-safari trip without changing hotels.

  • Return light-aircraft flights from Zanzibar
  • Shared 4x4 game drives and a bush lunch
  • By far the most-reviewed Mikumi safari on GetYourGuide

From Zanzibar: Mikumi Safari by Twin-Engine Plane + Lunch

A fly-in day safari that makes a point of using a twin-engine aircraft for the hop between Zanzibar and Mikumi. The listing includes lunch, park fees and flights, and the longer stated duration reflects a fuller day on the ground. A solid alternative when the bestseller is sold out, or if two engines simply make you more comfortable.

  • Flights on a twin-engine aircraft
  • Lunch, park fees and flights included per the listing
  • Well reviewed, with around 150 ratings

From Zanzibar: Mikumi Day Trip Safari by Flight

Another operator’s version of the classic fly-in day: a morning flight from Zanzibar, a guided game drive in search of elephants, lions and the plains game, and a flight back the same day. It has only a handful of reviews, so read the latest ones before booking — but it is a useful option when other departures are full.

  • Return flights between Zanzibar and Mikumi
  • Guided game drive in the park
  • Small number of reviews, all positive so far

From Zanzibar: Selous Game Reserve Day Safari with Lunch

The other big fly-in safari from Zanzibar, to the former Selous Game Reserve — today largely Nyerere National Park. It is wilder and much larger than Mikumi, with rivers and lakes as well as bush. We list it because most people choosing a one-day safari from the island end up comparing exactly these two.

  • Flights, entry and guide included per the listing
  • Game viewing in Nyerere National Park (ex-Selous)
  • The main alternative to Mikumi from Zanzibar

Day safaris from Dar es Salaam and Morogoro

From Dar you can go all the way by road or take the electric SGR train as far as Morogoro. Either way it is a long day. Starting from Morogoro cuts the travelling to a fraction.

Booking a Mikumi safari: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Which is better: flying from Zanzibar or driving from Dar es Salaam?

If you are staying on Zanzibar, fly — it is the only way to do the park in a day from the island. From Dar the road or train trips are far cheaper. Flying costs more per hour in the park but spares you eight to twelve hours of travelling.

Are park fees included in the tour price?

Often, but not always. Each GetYourGuide listing states what is included; look for “park fees” or “entry fees” in the inclusions before you compare prices.

Shared or private safari?

Shared game drives are cheaper and perfectly good for a first safari. A private vehicle lets you decide how long to stay at a sighting and is worth it for families, photographers and keen birders.

How far ahead should I book?

For fly-in trips in July–October and over Christmas and New Year, book as early as you can: the planes are small. At other times a few days ahead is usually enough. Most tours offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

What should I bring on a day safari?

Passport, sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a light long-sleeved layer, insect repellent, binoculars, a charged camera or phone and some cash for tips. Luggage on light aircraft is limited to a small daypack.

Can I cancel if the weather is bad?

Most tours can be cancelled without charge up to 24 hours ahead. If an operator cancels a flight because of weather, you are normally offered another date or a refund — check the terms of the specific listing.
