Getting to Mikumi National Park

Mikumi is the easiest big-game park to reach from the Tanzanian coast. Here are all the ways in — and how long each really takes.

There are three practical ways to reach Mikumi: by light aircraft (mostly from Zanzibar), by road from Dar es Salaam along the main highway, or by SGR train from Dar to Morogoro and on by road. All of them end at the same place — the main gate and park headquarters at Kikoboga, where the game-drive tracks begin.

From Zanzibar by light aircraft

This is how the majority of international visitors arrive. Small turboprop aircraft fly from Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume International Airport to the Mikumi airstrip (often called Kikoboga), which lies beside the park headquarters. The flight takes about an hour, safari vehicles meet the plane, and you are among animals within minutes of landing.

Seats are normally sold as part of a package — the fly-in day safari or an overnight version — rather than as stand-alone tickets, and operators set departure times around daylight and weather. Expect a hotel pickup well before sunrise if you are staying on the north or east coast of the island. Our Mikumi from Zanzibar page walks through the day.

From Dar es Salaam by road

The park lies on the A7, Tanzania’s main highway to Zambia, roughly 280–300 km west of Dar es Salaam. The road is tarred all the way. It is also the country’s busiest truck route, single carriageway for most of its length, so the journey takes four and a half to six hours depending on traffic leaving the city and how many lorries you sit behind. The route passes Chalinze and Morogoro, then runs another 100–120 km to the park.

Organised day trips and overnight safaris include a vehicle and driver from your hotel. Day trips by road leave around 4–5 am and return late in the evening.

From Dar es Salaam by SGR train

Tanzania’s electric Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) began carrying passengers between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro in 2024 and has changed the journey. The train takes about two hours to Morogoro; from there it is around an hour and a half to two hours by road to the park gate. Several tours are now built around it.

Check the timetable. SGR schedules, fares and booking rules have changed several times since the line opened. Tickets are sold by Tanzania Railways Corporation online and at stations, passengers must show ID, and popular trains sell out. Treat any times you read — including ours — as a guide and confirm before you plan a same-day connection. On an organised tour the operator handles tickets.

By bus

Long-distance buses from Dar es Salaam to Iringa, Mbeya, Ifakara and beyond pass through the park and stop in Mikumi town, just west of it. They are cheap and frequent, leave mainly in the morning, and take most of a day. From Morogoro there are also minibuses. You cannot enter the park on foot, so arrange a vehicle through a lodge in town.

Self-drive

Driving yourself is feasible: the highway is tarred and the main park tracks are manageable in a 4x4 in the dry season. A high-clearance four-wheel-drive is strongly advised inside the park, essential in the rains. Drive defensively — overtaking trucks and buses are the real hazard — and avoid the highway after dark.

The highway through the park

For about 50 km the A7 runs straight through Mikumi, and it is quite normal to see elephants, giraffes, zebra and baboons from a bus window. Transit along the highway is free, but there are rules: strict speed limits with speed humps, no stopping to watch or photograph animals, no getting out and no feeding. Vehicles that hit wildlife are fined. To leave the tarmac and drive the game tracks you must enter through the gate and pay park fees.

At the gate

The main entrance and headquarters are at Kikoboga, on the north side of the highway. Here you register and pay the park fees. TANAPA does not accept cash: payment is by bank card or mobile money, and on a tour your guide deals with it. Bring your passport. Gates are open during daylight hours — as a rule from about 6.30 am to 6.30 pm — and game drives must finish before dark.

Day trip or overnight?

From Zanzibar by air, a day trip works well. From Dar es Salaam by road it is possible but exhausting — eight to twelve hours of travelling for four or five in the park. If your schedule allows, stay a night at Mikumi or break the journey in Morogoro. You will see more and enjoy it more.

Moving on from Mikumi

  • Udzungwa Mountains: turn south at Mikumi town; about an hour to an hour and a half to the park headquarters at Mang’ula. Udzungwa guide.
  • Ruaha: continue west through the Baobab Valley to Iringa, then on gravel to the park — a full day. Ruaha guide.
  • Nyerere (Selous): usually reached from Dar es Salaam, or from Morogoro via Kisaki on a rough seasonal road. Nyerere guide.

Getting to Mikumi: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is there an airport at Mikumi?

There is an airstrip beside the park headquarters, used by light aircraft. Most flights are charters or part of safari packages from Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam rather than regular scheduled services.

How long does it take to drive from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi?

Usually four and a half to six hours for the 280–300 km, depending on traffic and trucks. Leaving Dar before dawn saves a lot of time.

Does the SGR train go to Mikumi?

Not to the park itself. The nearest SGR station used for safaris is Morogoro, from where it is one and a half to two hours by road to the main gate.

Can I visit Mikumi by public transport?

You can reach Mikumi town by bus, but you need a vehicle to enter the park. Lodges in town rent 4x4s with drivers; alternatively book a day safari that starts in Morogoro.

Do I have to pay to drive through the park on the highway?

No. Transit on the public highway is free. You pay park fees only if you enter through the gate to go on a game drive or stay inside the park.

Which airport should I fly into for Mikumi?

Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam (DAR) for road and rail trips; Zanzibar (ZNZ) if you plan to combine beach and a fly-in safari.
