Mikumi Town & the Main Gate

The roadside base on the park’s western edge

Mikumi town is a strip of shops, fuel stations and truck stops along the Dar es Salaam–Iringa highway, just beyond the western boundary of the national park. It will never win a beauty contest, but it is the practical base for independent and budget travellers: the lodges here are a fraction of the price of camps inside the park, and most of them arrange game drives.

The town also sits at an important junction. The main highway continues west towards Iringa and Ruaha, while a side road turns south towards Kilombero, Ifakara and the Udzungwa Mountains. The park’s main gate and headquarters at Kikoboga are a short drive back east along the highway.

Top things to do: Mikumi Town & the Main Gate

Arrange a game drive

Lodges and camps in town rent safari vehicles with a driver-guide by the half-day or day; park fees are paid separately at the gate. If you have arrived by bus, this is how you get into the park. Booking a safari that includes transport from Dar, Morogoro or Zanzibar saves the organising.

Drive the highway through the park

About 50 km of the main highway runs straight through Mikumi, and you will very likely see elephants, giraffes, zebra and baboons from the road — it is the only stretch of trunk road in Tanzania where that is routine. Transit is free, but stopping, getting out and feeding animals are prohibited and speed limits are strictly enforced.

Use it as a base for Udzungwa

With the turn-off for Udzungwa on the edge of town, Mikumi makes a workable base for a day hike to Sanje Falls: leave early, hike in the morning and be back by late afternoon.

Eat and restock

This is the place to buy fuel, water and snacks before going into the park. The lodge restaurants are the most reliable places to eat; the roadside grills serve chips, grilled meat and chipsi mayai (chip omelette) at local prices.

How to get to Mikumi Town & the Main Gate

  • By road Mikumi town is roughly 300 km from Dar es Salaam and about 120 km beyond Morogoro. Long-distance buses between Dar and Iringa, Mbeya or Ifakara pass through and will drop you on request — allow most of a day from Dar.
  • The faster combination is the SGR train from Dar to Morogoro and a bus, taxi or pre-booked transfer from there. See getting to Mikumi for details.

Insider tips

  • The highway is busy with heavy trucks day and night. Ask for a room away from the road.
  • There are ATMs in town but they are not always working; carry some Tanzanian shillings from Dar or Morogoro.
  • Park fees are paid by card or mobile money at the gate, not in cash.
  • Do not walk along the highway towards the park — the boundary is unfenced and elephants and buffalo do come out.

Mikumi Town & the Main Gate: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Should I stay in Mikumi town or inside the park?

Town is cheaper and fine for a night or two; staying inside the park costs more (you pay park fees for the time you are inside) but puts you among the wildlife at dawn and dusk. See where to stay.

Can I visit the park from Mikumi town without a tour?

Yes. Rent a 4x4 with a driver from a lodge in town and pay park fees at the gate. You cannot enter on foot, by bicycle or by motorbike.

Is it safe to drive the highway through the park at night?

It is best avoided. Animals cross the road, heavy trucks dominate it and visibility is poor. Plan to arrive in daylight.
